How do the interactions between the digital environment and the subject influence learning to read and write?

Hélène LABAT, Associate professor, CY Cergy Paris Université, Laboratoire Paragraphe, CHArt, France

The aim of this synthesis will be to characterize the contexts of learning letters and the alphabetic code and to analyze the effect of interactions between the environment and the learner on the emergence of this knowledge. To this end, research in developmental and cognitive psychology that manipulates the medium (computer keyboard, touch tablet, paper) and/or the tool (pencil, stylus, finger) will be presented. The results will be discussed in terms of bidirectional environment-subject relationships. They show that the type of action produced by the subject modulates learning, but also that the level of prior knowledge and automation of the subject's cognitive processes influences his experience of the environment. From a practical perspective, this synthesis will propose some ideas on the use of digital technology to support learners with reading and writing difficulties.
